Volunteer Africa 32° South Abstract: WELCOME TO YOUR VOLUNTEER EXP! Description:The Volunteer Africa 32° South program has been initiated to address the needs of two increasingly important developmental areas of the Eastern Cape in South Africa, namely education and the environment. The initial focal area of VA32°south is the Wild Coast of the former Transkei homeland. These homelands, under the apartheid government 1950’s – 1994, remained deliberately underdeveloped regions in which the dominant white economic sector could draw on a consistent labour pool who were largely denied access to equal opportunities within society, and were therefore unable to challenge the monopoly at an academic and economic level. The region today remains for the most part an undeveloped, rural enclave within the greater South Africa. Access to effective education, resources and equal opportunities are leading challenges facing the communities of the Wild Coast. VA32°south is based in Chintsa on the southern Wild Coast, and it is from here that you can really make a difference. SPECIAL PROJECTS The “From Township to Village” project concept is a Volunteer Africa 32° south initiative to address the lack of appropriate communal and recreational facilities in the townships of South Africa. It has been developed in conjunction with relevant community leadership structures and involves the rehabilitation and development of an area of the township for considerable improvement from an environmentally abused area to that of a useable and beautiful community space.
