The Experience

Experience the freedom of gliding over one of the last remaining natural forested valleys along the Sabie River. The aerial cable trail takes you down into the valley basin, stopping along the way on a number of elevated platforms to admire the natural vegetation, birdlife and the views of the forest floor below.

Each section of the trail varies in length from 70 to 230 meters linking a total of 10 platforms, making this the longest cable trail in Africa (1,2km). The trail has been designed and built to South African civil engineering standards and all the equipment has been designed specifically for this activity and tried and tested worldwide. All groups are escorted by qualified guides.

Participants meet at Gecko Lodge, just outside Hazyview, to complete the necessary documentation before being kitted out and briefed. Guests are then Transported to the starting point of the trail. After the trail has been completed, participants are returned to Gecko Lodge where meals and refreshments can be arranged if required. Bottled water is provided during the trail.

We can accommodate up to 8 participants per trip, on scheduled departures, the whole tour takes approx 3 hours to complete. Larger groups can be accommodated over several trips. This activity is suitable for people of all ages; however children under the age of 10 will need to be assisted, please contact our office for more information. Advanced booking is recommended.

The maximum per person weight that can be accommodated is 120kg.

The Forest

Skyway Trails is set in one of the last remaining natural forested valleys along the Sabie River. Ideally situated on the northern side of the river, and predominantly south facing, it is well protected from the Northern sun, and as a result remains relatively moist throughout the year. The valley forms a steep bowl that has preserved elements of true afro mountain forest and boasts a number of endangered plant species (Breonadia silcina, Pterocarpus anglolensis ) including a rarely found orchid (Acampe praemorsa), which has now become the only second record of its existence in the Mpumalanga Province.

The wonderful botanical diversity supports a large variety of animals that have made this forest there home. From the more commonly seen Purple-crested Turaco to the less common and rarely seen Narina Trogon, the forest canopy is alive with activity. On the forest floor, bushpigs, bushbuck and the rare red duiker go about there business undisturbed often foraging below a troop of Vervet monkeys moving through the valley from one fruiting tree to the other.

The valley is also home to a variety of aquatic animals that inhabit the perennial stream that cuts through forest on its way down to the Sabie River.

The cable trail gives you a unique perspective of this environment. And as you descend through some of the most spectacular scenery in this region, and with the sound of running water always in the background it is sure to be an experience you will never forget.
